No cost/low cost ways to survive the recession

1. Start saying, without embarrassment or shame, "We can't afford it."
2. Those of us with reasonably secure jobs/income SHOULD spend some money to help others keep their jobs. Spend money in your county, with your "people" when possible. Get your car and your hair fixed. It's important to still spend on goods and services, especially when they are another person's income. For example, order less expensive menu items and tip the server better than the bill indicates...if possible eat at Cheesecake Factory and ask to be seated at Kelly's table.
3. Use PUBLIC LIBRARIES...your tax dollars support them! So use them...for FREE!
4. Cut the lighting in your home by half, if possible. Where there are two bulbs, use only one; I just went into our bathroom and uncrewed two of the four bulbs in there.
5. Unplug your charging cords when not in use.
6. If you want to keep fast-food companies in business and their employees employed, but do not want to eat the food that is so bad for us, buy a gift card and hand it to the homeless person standing on the corner.
7. A "tall" Chai Latte from Starbucks costs something over $3.00 has almost 150 calories (3 WW points), whereas a container of International Coffee's Chai Latte mix costs something just over $3.00 also but has 23 servings, each having only 30 calories (1 WW point)...you do the math and then make the call! Okay...I'll do the math for the COST. 23 Chai Lattes from Starbuck's would cost over $70.00. Now, IF you are concerned about Starbuck's staying in business and you're worried about its employees, go there occasionally...be sure to tip well...at Harris-Teeter, Starbucks tips go to charity! Even if you cut your Starbuck's habit by half, you'd be well ahead of the game!
8. Eat BEANS! One bag of dried pinto beans costs $1.20 at K-Mart. It makes two BIG pots of beans. They are FILLING, nutritious, CHEAP, and delicious!!!! The after-effects can be quite entertaining too, if you're with people you love! Add onions on the side to keep it interesting!

I would love for all of you to add your own thoughts to this post (and all the others too). Some of this is meant in fun, but it's really pretty serious. Let's see how THOUGHTFUL we can be about all of this!

Shop at Aldi. You can save 20% to 30% on your grocery bill. You need to remember to bring a quarter and bags but the savings adds up!

Also, order off the dollar menu at fast food.

One other thought.. I can buy a canned ham for about $7-$9 at Aldi. I can make a week worth of meals with that canned ham. Ham and potatoes, Ham and fried rice, Ham omlets, Ham and macaroni and cheese, Ham and grilled cheese, Ham and Bean soup...okay I have more but you get the idea!

Sounds good, Bubba! And ham is a whole lot cheaper than "shrimp"...
Too, ham goes well with pinto beans!

We LOVE Aldi!! It's a game with the kids too - one gets to put the quarter in for the cart and the other gets to take it out (free entertainment!) Plus they can help bag the groceries = life skills!
