It's another of my pet peeves...the overuse of some words to the point that they no longer have any meaning at all. Some examples are "amazing" and "breaking news." If everybody is amazing, then no one is! If all news is breaking news, there is no such thing as breaking news. Oh yeah, and another one is "special"...if everybody is special, then nobody is.
Also, I have never liked and will never like the phrase "soul mate." I have to suppose that the first person who ever used it really was on to something, but it seems like now if you don't use it to describe your "true love" then you don't have something that those who have found their "soul mate" have. Exactly what would that be?
Does anybody else have words or phrases that get on your nerves?

I completly agree with the "amazing" and such words - My aunt and her family use "amazing" way to much and it gets to me. I want to feel the power of that word when it is said to me - not think "oh I'm just like dinner last night!" But phrases that I do like are contradicting ones like "terribly beautiful", "painfully pleasing" or "awfully good"!
Which, of course, are called oxymorons!
